Congressional CTC Champions Celebrate First Payments, Call for Permanent Expansion

Today, Representatives Suzan DelBene (WA-01), Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), and Ritchie Torres (NY-15), and Senators Michael Bennet (CO), Sherrod Brown (OH), and Cory Booker (NJ) released the following statement on the delivery of the first Child Tax Credit payments.

“Today is a historic day for American families. With the delivery of the first round of expanded Child Tax Credit payments, help is here for parents that have been struggling to make ends meet during this pandemic. The expanded credit will provide relief to nearly 66 million children – close to 90 percent of all kids in this country. This is one of the single most impactful and transformative parts of the American Rescue Plan.

“The expanded credit is in place for only one year. We cannot stop now. Kids do not grow up in one year or five years. Parents deserve the predictability a permanent expansion would provide as they raise their families. We must seize this moment to permanently expand the credit. Doing so would cut childhood poverty in half and help us rebuild our middle class for the next generation.

“With support from the overwhelming majority of Democrats in both chambers and House and Senate leadership, we will use every tool at our disposal to help make this a permanent benefit.”
