Progress Towards a More Just Society

Dear friend,

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives took two critical steps with my support to ensure that our society serves and protects every American.

First, the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, legislation that will reimagine policing to protect everyone in our community. The bill bans chokeholds, increases accountability and transparency, and serves as a key first step in ending police brutality. We have lost too many lives—overwhelmingly, Black men—to police brutality. You can learn more, share your story, and become a citizen cosponsor of the bill here.

We also passed the For The People Act. This sweeping pro-democracy reform bill will curb the influence of dark money in our campaigns, hold our elected officials to a higher standard, and protect voting rights. While Washington state has taken several of these steps on its own, we must ensure that faith is restored in our political process across the country after a turbulent election cycle that exposed pervasive voter suppression. With new partisan redistricting efforts looming in other states, the need for anti-corruption, pro-democracy reform is urgent. You can learn more here.

These bills now move to the Senate, which must take them up quickly to finish this work.
