Infrastructure is calling

Dear friend,

Our state has 416 bridges and over 5,400 miles of highway that are in poor condition. This is indicative of a larger infrastructure crisis around the country with crumbling roads, bridges, airports, and railways. We rely on these structures every day to commute to work, get our kids to school, and live our lives. This is unacceptable and it is time for Congress to make a historic investment in our infrastructure that will help get Americans back to work and rebuild our local economies following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this week, I visited the Highway 2 Trestle that connects Lake Stevens and Everett to highlight the urgent need to pass the American Jobs Plan. The trestle is one of many examples of the infrastructure crisis in our region. If you live or work in Snohomish County or have gotten caught on the trestle during rush hour, you understand the urgent need for action. Traffic overwhelms the trestle, resulting in heavy congestion, increased risk of accidents, and concerns about structural longevity.

The American Jobs Plan will help repair and rebuild our nation’s infrastructure, like the Highway 2 Trestle, while creating long-term, good-paying jobs in our communities. In the 21stcentury, infrastructure means more than roads and bridges. It also means affordable, universal broadband so people can learn and work from their homes, a modernized public transit system including high-speed rail, more affordable housing, and deploying more smart tech in our communities.

We should not settle for the infrastructure of the last century. Instead, we should be building the infrastructure for the next 50 years. We have a historic opportunity to build our economy back better than before and these critical infrastructure investments will help us get there.
