DelBene Announces WA-01 Winner of 2021 Congressional App Challenge

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) announced the winner of the 2021 Congressional App Challenge from Washington’s 1st Congressional District. The winning app, DermDetect, was created by Soham Bhosale from Bothell High School.

Bhosale designed an initial screening tool for users concerned about potentially cancerous and abnormal skin lesions. The app analyzes lesions, provides recommendations, and documents abnormal skin growth by reminding users to take follow-up pictures over time. It also uses geolocation to direct users to nearby health clinics for care. A demo of DermDetect can be found here.

“Telehealth and health apps have grown rapidly in recent years and are playing an important role in connecting Americans with doctors during the pandemic. DermDetect is a great example of how we can leverage technology to help people stay on top of their health care and encourage them to seek preventive care,” said DelBene. “Congratulations to Soham and all our participants on a job well done. I continue to be amazed at your ingenuity, compassion, and resourcefulness, evident in the submissions we see year after year.”

The winning app was selected by a panel of impartial judges. DermDetect will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for the next year, along with winning apps from other congressional districts.

DelBene was a Co-chair of the Congressional App Challenge during the 116th Congress.
