Digital Trade Caucus Celebrates Renewal of WTO Digital Tariff Moratorium
Washington, D.C.,
June 17, 2022
Today, Digital Trade Caucus Co-Chairs Suzan DelBene (WA-01) and Darin LaHood (IL-18) released the following statement on the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) renewal of the longstanding moratorium on tariffs on digital goods (e.g., e-books, music, movies, and video games) and digital services (e.g., software, emails, and text messages) following their call to do so at the twelfth WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) in Geneva this week. “Failure to renew the moratorium on digital trade tariffs would have been chaotic for global trade and undermined the recovery of the American economy. This straightforward agreement has been renewed for over 20 years. We appreciate Ambassador Tai’s leadership on this issue. This is a clear win for American businesses and workers. We will continue to advocate for pro-growth digital trade policies to drive our economy forward.” On June 10, DelBene and LaHood led a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai signed by 34 House lawmakers pushing the Biden administration to make renewing the moratorium one of its top priorities at MC12. |
