DelBene Statement on House Action to Avert National Rail Shutdown

House improves agreement by including seven days of paid sick leave for workers

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement on House passage of bipartisan legislation to avert a national rail strike.

“I fully support the right of rail workers to negotiate for better pay, benefits, and working conditions. For too long, railroads have had the upper hand.

“A national railroad strike would be devastating to working families and our economy. I voted today to enact the tentative agreement reached by union leaders and the railroads to provide workers with a raise and improved benefits while averting significant harm to our economy.

“Workers deserve paid sick leave, which is why I also voted to enhance the agreement by including the workers’ ask for seven days of paid sick leave. I urge the Senate to follow suit and enact a fair, pro-worker agreement.”
