Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement on a ruling by a federal judge in Texas banning the FDA’s longstanding approval of mifepristone, a commonly used abortion medication.  

“This outrageous decision by a Trump-appointed federal judge should be called out for what it is – another step towards a nationwide abortion ban. Anti-abortion extremists were never going to stop at overturning Roe v. Wade. Instead, they continue to weaponize our judiciary to accomplish what they cannot at the ballot box. If allowed to stand, this precedent could allow activist judges to insert themselves into more aspects of our daily lives. 

“This decision flies in the face of science. Mifepristone has been available to Americans for over two decades and is safer than many commonly used over-the-counter medications. Scientists, not politicians or judges, should be informing our health care choices.  

“The implications of this decision and a separate one from a federal judge in Washington state are still under review but it is important to know that for now mifepristone is still available. I will continue fighting to protect reproductive health freedom for all Americans and push for passage of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would enshrine abortion access in federal law.”
