KOMO: Rep. DelBene weighs in on expanding child tax credit, addressing poverty

Holly Menino, KOMO

KOMO News caught with Rep. Suzan DelBene for the Connect to Congress series. DelBene represents Washington's 1st congressional district, which covers parts of King and Snohomish counties.

The congresswoman spoke about new legislation she is co-sponsoring that would expand and improve the child tax credit.

"We just introduced the American Family Act which is the expanded child tax credit," DelBene said. "This was a really historic benefit that we provided as part of the American Rescue Plan. It was those monthly checks that people were getting up to $300 per child helping families pay for basic necessities like housing, food, school supplies, diapers, childcare. We were able to lift four million kids across the country out of poverty as a result of the expanded child tax credit."

The original tax credit was in place for a year before it expired. She says they're working to make it permanent, and that's what this legislation would do.
