DelBene Statement on the Passing of Tokitae

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement on the passing of Tokitae, the world’s oldest captive orca, who had been at the Miami Sequarium since 1970 after her capture from the Puget Sound.

“It is with great sadness that I offer my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Tokitae, a Pacific Northwest treasure.”

“Tokitae's story, including her subpar living conditions, ignited critical discussions surrounding the treatment and well-being of marine animals held in captivity. As we reflect on her life, we must continue the push for higher standards of care and protection for these remarkable creatures.

“My thoughts go out to all who were touched by Tokitae, including all of the tribal members and advocates who pushed so strongly for her freedom. Let us honor her memory by advancing comprehensive, responsible, and science-based practices that protect wildlife like Tokitae, while also promoting the conservation and preservation of their natural habitats.”
