DelBene: American Workers Deserve More from Congress

BOTHELL – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) issued the following statement to celebrate Labor Day:

“Labor Day is an important opportunity for our country to honor the invaluable contribution of American workers to our nation’s prosperity. Working men and women are the backbone of our economy and should be treated with respect and dignity. On this day, we must recommit to ensuring that if you work hard in this country, you can achieve the American Dream.

“Unfortunately today, there are still too many barriers. Millions of Americans are working 40 hours or more every week and still can’t earn a living wage. To grow the middle class, Congress should raise the minimum wage, guarantee equal pay for equal work and ensure Americans receive fair compensation for long hours worked.

“These policy changes are just the beginning. Much more can be done to help support our workers this Labor Day and it’s past time Congress act.”

DelBene has helped introduce the Raise the Wage Act, which would increase the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020, as well as the Paycheck Fairness Act to help close the wage gap between women and men. She also supports the administration’s effort to provide a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work by extending overtime pay to nearly 5 million workers.
