Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today released the following statement after the Department of Labor approved a petition for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) for workers of Alcoa, an aluminum smelter in Ferndale: “I am pleased this vital assistance will be made available to Alcoa workers in the First District,” DelBene said. “If these hard-working men and women are displaced, we should continue to make sure they are able to transition into new employment as soon as possible.” The Department of Labor’s decision allows Alcoa workers to apply for TAA, including long-term career training and income support. Alcoa recently announced that it will idle its aluminum smelters at the end of June in Ferndale, Wash., because of price manipulations in the Chinese market. As a co-chair of the Congressional Aluminum Caucus, DelBene has called for an investigation of Chinese oversupply and market manipulation. DelBene signed a bipartisan letter led by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) urging the Department of Labor to issue TAA. ### |
