BOTHELL – Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today met with Washington state researchers to call for an increase in federal funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

“All across the country, Americans are suffering from heartbreaking conditions. If we are serious about breaking new ground in our understanding of complex diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer, it’s imperative we boost investments in medical research,” DelBene said. “That’s why I’ve called on congressional leaders to finally increase funding for medical research at NIH so we can develop the next generation of treatments and cures.”

Last month, DelBene led more than 100 House members in urging the Appropriations Committee to provide NIH at least $32 billion in 2016 — a nearly $2 billion increase above 2015 levels. An omnibus federal funding package is expected before the current continuing resolution expires on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Funding for NIH supports vital research to develop breakthrough treatments and improve health outcomes, and it supports more than 300,000 jobs at 2,500 research institutions around the country, including the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Bastyr University and the University of all of which were present at Monday’s roundtable discussion with DelBene.
