Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) has been appointed to serve on President Obama’s Export Council, the President’s advisory committee on international trade. DelBene will use the opportunity to advocate for economic policies that create jobs in Washington state and expand export markets for local businesses. “It’s an honor to be named to the President’s Export Council,” DelBene said. “I look forward to representing Washington while working with labor, industry and business leaders to advise the President on ways we can increase U.S. exports, create good paying domestic jobs and support small businesses. It’s vital that our trade policies protect U.S. workers and the environment.” Washington is the most trade dependent state in the country, with trade accounting for 40 percent of its economy. Exports touch several industries in the First Congressional District, including technology, agriculture, aerospace and medical equipment. “Exports are especially critical to Washington’s economic growth and prosperity,” DelBene said. “Western Washington exports some of the world’s best airplanes, software, wine, dairy and produce. We should implement policies that allow more people around the world to buy our products.” The council, composed of policymakers and business leaders, advises the President on policies and initiatives that increase U.S. exports to global markets. “Congresswoman DelBene is a longtime advocate for wines produced in Washington state,” said Kari Leitch, Vice President of Communications and Corporate Affairs for Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. “She will provide an important perspective on, and support for, our industry’s efforts to increase distribution in critical export markets.” Only five members of the U.S. House of Representatives are appointed to the council by House leadership for a two-year term. Rep. Dan Kildee (MI-05) was the other House Democrat appointed this year. ### |
