DelBene to Ryan: Let Congress Vote on Immigration Reform

Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (D-WA) today derided House Republican leadership for trying to score political points instead of allowing a vote on comprehensive immigration reform.

“Everyone agrees that our immigration system is broken but instead of voting on a solution, Congress is again wasting time on a political gimmick that does not address real problems,” DelBene said. “The President took lawful action to help families being torn apart by our current system. If Republicans take issue with that, they should stop obstructing meaningful debate and allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform.”

On Thursday, DelBene voted against a resolution that would authorize Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) to file an anti-immigrant amicus brief with the Supreme Court. She spoke on the House floor before the vote. Video can be found HERE.

DelBene joined more than 200 colleagues in signing an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to review the Fifth Circuit Court’s decision on Texas v. United States, which blocked the Secretary of Homeland Security from implementing the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) and expanding the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programs announced by the President as part of his immigration executive actions.

As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, DelBene has led efforts to enact comprehensive immigration reform by helping introduce the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act (H.R. 15) last Congress. She has also consistently said that it will take congressional action to truly repair our broken immigration system.
