DelBene Statement on Pope Francis Joint Meeting of Congress
Washington, DC,
September 24, 2015
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today released the following statement after the address of the Bishop of Rome and Sovereign of the Vatican City, Pope Francis. “I agree that Congress must take action on many of the issues Pope Francis addressed today – immigration reform, climate change and the need to help those who are struggling. Communities of faith have been tireless leaders in these efforts, and it’s encouraging to hear Pope Francis speak out for such important causes. “It’s clear our immigration system is broken. Our country was founded and built by immigrants, on the principles of openness, freedom and equality. Fixing our broken system is critical for workers, families and students throughout our communities, and it would strengthen our economy. Even though House leadership has failed to allow a vote on comprehensive reform, I will continue fighting for Congress to consider it because it’s not only the smart thing to do, it’s the right thing to do. “There is no doubt climate change is a serious threat to our way of life, economy and children – not to mention the future of our planet – and we need to address it now. I know firsthand that the nature surrounding us is what makes living in the Pacific Northwest so special. In order to protect the quality of life that we cherish for future generations, we must address the challenge climate change poses without delay. “Congress also needs to help the working families and businesses that are still struggling in the midst of our economy’s continued recovery. Long-term economic growth can only be achieved when all working families have the opportunity to succeed. We must expand access to opportunity and build an economy that works for everyone. “Pope Francis called on us to face today’s challenges head on, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle on these important issues.” DelBene invited Father Tim Sauer to join her for the address. He serves at both St. John Vianney in Darrington and Immaculate Conception in Arlington. He continues to be a comforting presence in the community following the tragic SR 530 landslide. # # # |
