Rep. DelBene addresses rising costs, tariffs, and AI impact on Medicare claims

U.S. Rep. Suzan DelBene, a Democrat who represents Washington’s 1st Congressional District, reflected on President Donald Trump’s first year in office while raising concerns about rising costs for families and recent federal policy developments affecting seniors.

In a new interview, DelBene said new data released Tuesday shows Washington families are paying an average of $2,000 more than last year for basic necessities, adding to financial pressure driven by the rising cost of living.

She also weighed in on a pending U.S. Supreme Court decision related to tariffs, which could be issued at any time.

DelBene said the ruling could have significant economic implications, particularly for consumers already facing higher everyday expenses.

Another issue drawing concern from the congresswoman is the use of artificial intelligence by Medicare to review and deny claims in Washington and five other states.

DelBene said she has been working to stop the practice, citing potential harm to seniors who rely on Medicare coverage.

DelBene emphasized that the use of AI in the claims process could result in wrongful denials and delays in care, disproportionately affecting older Americans.
