Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) today helped introduce a resolution denouncing attacks on women’s healthcare facilities and affirming that all women have the right to access reproductive healthcare services without the fear of violence, intimidation or harassment. “No one should face intimidation and violence at their doctor’s office — period,” DelBene said. “Lawmakers should focus on protecting women’s rights to make their own healthcare decisions and ensuring they have access to safe, affordable, high-quality healthcare, instead of propagating false information and hateful rhetoric that can endanger women’s safety.” More than 65 percent of Americans believe the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade more than 40 years ago was right. Yet Congress continues to waste time voting on measures to limit women’s access to care – 19 votes alone this year. Since 1977, women’s healthcare centers have experienced nearly 7,000 violent acts, including bombings, arson, death threats, kidnappings and assaults. Within the past six months, vandalism and threats against clinics have increased, including an arson attack on a Pullman, Wash., clinic in September and a mass shooting in Colorado. Last week, DelBene joined her Democratic colleagues on the Republicans’ Select Committee to Attack Women’s Health in calling on Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) to disband the committee in wake of the attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo. # # # |
