DelBene Statement on the Healthy Families Act
Washington, DC,
February 13, 2015
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) cosponsored with Senator Patty Murray (WA) and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) a bill that helps working women and their families. The Healthy Families Act (H.R. 932) allows workers in businesses with more than 15 employees to earn up to seven paid sick days a year to recover from short-term illness, care for a sick family member, seek routine medical care or seek assistance related to domestic violence. The bill also allows sick time to be used to attend meetings at a child’s school. “Workers should not be forced to choose between caring for their health and keeping their paychecks,” DelBene said. “We must update our nation’s workplace policies to ensure working families are both healthy and financially stable. I hope Congress considers this commonsense proposal that would help give workers the security they need to succeed both at work and at home.” An estimated 40 percent of private sector workers in the United States don’t have access to paid sick leave, meaning millions of Americans have to decide whether to stay home with a sick child or risk losing wages or their jobs. DelBene also cosponsored the bill during the 113th Congress. # # # |
