Pacific Northwest Receives $27.5M for New Hydrogen Hub

Initial round of funding will go towards planning, analysis, design, community engagement

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) announced that the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association (PNWH2) has been awarded $27.5 million in initial federal investment. The hub is a collective of private sector, government, academic, research, and philanthropic entities across Washington, Oregon, and Montana, to accelerate clean hydrogen technology, production, and deployment.

“Washington has long been a leader in clean energy innovation, and this initial $27.5 million investment will help us begin to rapidly expand our hydrogen economy,” said DelBene. “This funding will accelerate the development of clean hydrogen technology, create good-paying jobs, and drive economic growth across our region, while reducing our carbon emissions by 1.7 million metric tons annually and building a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

The $27.5 million grant is the first phase of the funding, with additional private and federal resources available as the project progresses. The broader program, funded through the bipartisan infrastructure law, includes a total of up to $1 billion for PNWH2. The hubs are designed to foster clean energy investments, create high-quality jobs, and enhance our nation’s energy security.

The clean hydrogen sector is projected to generate approximately $140 billion in revenue and create 700,000 jobs by 2050, including 10,000 direct jobs in our region created by the hub. The Pacific Northwest is uniquely positioned to lead this industry.

In March 2023, DelBene and members of the Washington and Oregon congressional delegations sent a letter of support for Pacific NW Hydrogen Hub’s application to DOE’s Hydrogen Hub. The letter can be found here.
